Brand Overview: Fieldwork Co.

As you may have read in our previous blog post, Phidon is bringing in more Canadian stationery this year! The first new brand to arrive, and one that has been highly anticipated, is Fieldwork Co.

Fieldwork Co. makes a variety of leather and waxed canvas goods that are designed for outdoor adventures. The brand is based out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and is fronted by Isaac Haines. Isaac makes all of his products with his family in mind, and the Fieldwork Co. family recently welcomed a new baby!

At Phidon, we tend to be very careful with the brands we choose to carry. We don’t just want something that will look nice on the shelf — we want to carry things that will be used and loved by our customers for years to come. Between the environmental impacts (by reducing waste and consumption) and the joys of making something a part of your daily routine for a lifetime, we want your Phidon goodies to be as resilient as the amazing people that shop here.

Fieldwork Co. has exactly that same idea in mind, which is why we think this is such a great brand to have in the store. Isaac works with only strong and durable materials, and always has quality in mind with everything he makes. In fact, Fieldwork Co. started when Isaac couldn’t find the high-quality, traditionally-designed products he was looking for in stores. He started making the products he needed for himself, then he started to offer them for other like-minded people. Now, here we are!

All of the brand’s goods are handcrafted with care with the motto “less is more” in mind. For Isaac, the beauty and functionality of the product has to come hand-in-hand, so the products are as minimalist as they are strong.

Currently, we are carrying Fieldwork Co.’s Artist Rolls. The Artist Rolls come in three colours: charcoal, field tan, and forest green. All of the colours are muted, so they are neutral enough to hold every colour of pen and pencil (yes, even those neon Blackwing pencils and Caran D’Ache pens!). The rolls are made of Fieldwork Co.’s waxed canvas, and they feature leather accents and a brass buckle.

The Artist Rolls have nine generous pockets, and the pockets are slightly diagonal, making them able to hold several different sizes of pens and accessories. That makes them great for holding even short and stubby accessories, like pocket pens, extra cartridges, and washi tapes!

There is also a flap to fold over your writing utensils to protect them from the elements. The features of waxed canvas makes the rolls water-resistant, so you can be sure that your treasured writing companions will be protected even if you end up in the rain or snow. There is also a leather belt around the centre of the roll to keep it securely closed on your adventures!

Though these rolls are a great option for every type of writer and artist, we think that these rolls will be especially great for urban sketching and bullet journaling. With their utility, they can go from museums to rolling fields and from mountains to streetscapes and still fit into their surroundings. On top of that, the slots can fit everything that you’ll need into a compact package — pencils, pens, erasers, water brushes, watercolours, you name it!
